Summary

WARNING!! MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS!!

1869, in a part of Spain under the control of Italy. Julio, who plays the guitar in a restaurant in Toledo, was raised in an orphanage. He is called "The Black Rose of Toledo" because of how strong he is in a fight. One day Emilio Castelor (a friend of the restaurant's owner Leonor) arrives with his son Fernando. They are aristocrats with royal Spanish blood in them, and they want to overthrow the government and restore the monarchy. For this they are recruiting all over the country for like-minded individuals, but they are being followed by the secret police, who are looking for their movements.

One day the secret police come into the bar where Julio works, acting arrogant and rude. He calls them out, and they start a fight with him, but he emerges the winner. The Castelors see the fight and are impressed, and Emilio offers to hire Julio to act as a bodyguard as he and his son do their business. But Julio is not impressed by the aristocrats and refuses rudely.

Later Julio is attacked by the secret police, in revenge for the former bar fight. In the scuffle, he stabs one of them, named Nicolas. He then flees the city and takes refuge with the gypsies. Shortly thereafter, Fernando and two of his followers take shelter with the gypsies when the secret police are chasing them. Despite Julio's protests, the gypsies take the three young nobles in.

Julio is tracked down and captured, and Antonio, the chief of the secret police, tells him: "We will overlook this murder if you tell us where the Castelors are." Julio, however, refuses to act so cowardly. Antonio then sets a trap, using the knife that Julio stabbed Nicolas with. The knife used to belong to Emilio, and when Antonio reveals where he got it, it is revealed that Julio is Emilio's illegitimate son, by a gypsy woman.

Julio goes to visit his mother, but the meeting is a bitter one. Julio's friends and mother learn that the secret policeman that he though he killed (Nicolas) is still alive. Julio, prodded on by Antonio, goes to kill his father. However, Sonia arrives and reveals that Nicolas wasn't killed, only bribed to disappear by Antonio. Julio, in turn, stops Nicolas from killing Antonio. And then he is struck down by Antonio's gun...
